This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by Australian national peak clinical bodies.
This unit applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.
The course is applicable to not only workers who may be called on to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, but families as well. It’s useful for employees and managers in a workplace, for community organisations, families, and public.

This is a blended course with self-paced online learning and face-to-face training. Before attending the face-to-face training, students will need to complete their e-Learning and knowledge assessment. This can be done in one sitting or over several sessions.
Depending on the student’s learning ability, they should allow up to 3.5 hours for e-Learning. The face-to-face training and practical assessment takes approximately 6 hours in a classroom environment.

The assessment in support of the unit of competency requires the learner to complete a written knowledge assessment and each candidate to demonstrate skills in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, scenarios and simulations to assess candidates’ skills and knowledge.
The learner must answer all the written knowledge questions correctly. There is the opportunity for this knowledge assessment to be conducted verbally if the learner requires this level of support.
The practical assessment is conducted under controlled conditions in a classroom. Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the workplace or community setting.
On Successfully completing the training and assessment you will be issued a Statement of Attainment Issuing you the unit of competency:
HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting. This unit of competence is nationally recognised and provides individuals with a valuable outcome that is recognised throughout Australia.
Please Note: HLTAID009, HLTAID010, HLTAID011 competencies are imbedded in this unit.
Online learning plus face-to-face classroom training and assessment
Elective Units
Learner training is supported through the provision of quality learning materials and resources. All equipment and consumables are supplied as part of the course.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, casual clothes and sensible shoes.
The assessment criteria requires students to demonstrate the ability to correctly perform at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an adult manikin placed on the floor.
