This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to provide a first aid response to infants and children in line with first aid guidelines determined by Australian national peak clinical bodies.
This unit applies to a range of workers within an education and care setting who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthma and anaphylactic emergencies. This includes early childhood workers and educators who work with school age children in outside school hours care and vacation programs.
The course is applicable to not only workers who may be called on to provide a first aid response in a range of situations, but families as well. It’s useful for employees and managers in a workplace, for community organisations, families, and public.

Medical emergencies can occur at any time and in any setting. This course gives you the skills and confidence to recognise and respond to a wide range of first aid emergencies — from cardiac arrest and anaphylaxis to fractures and stroke — in accordance with Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines and Australian national peak clinical body recommendations, giving a casualty the best possible chance of a positive outcome until professional help arrives.

This is a blended course with self-paced online learning and face-to-face training. Before attending the face-to-face training, students will need to complete their e-Learning and knowledge assessment. This can be done in one sitting or over several sessions.
Depending on the student’s learning ability, they should allow up to 3.5 hours for e-Learning. The face-to-face training and practical assessment takes approximately 5.5 hours in a classroom environment.

Participants must meet the following:
– Participants must be at least 18 years of age at the time of enrolment.
– Applicants under 18 years of age are not eligible to enrol in Highlands Training Solutions courses.
– Participants must also possess basic digital skills and have access to a computer, tablet or smartphone, with internet access to complete the online learning and knowledge assessment.
– Participants must have sufficient language, literacy and numeracy skills to read and interpret first aid information, complete assessment activities, and communicate effectively in emergency situations. Where a learner requires additional language, literacy or numeracy support, Highlands Training Solutions will work with the learner to identify reasonable support strategies to assist them in successfully completing the course where possible.
The assessment in support of the unit of competency requires the learner to complete a written knowledge assessment and each candidate to demonstrate skills in an environment that provides realistic in-depth, scenarios and simulations to assess candidates’ skills and knowledge.
The learner must answer all the written knowledge questions correctly. There is the opportunity for this knowledge assessment to be conducted verbally if the learner requires this level of support.
The practical assessment is conducted under controlled conditions in a classroom. Evidence of the ability to complete tasks outlined in elements and performance criteria of this unit in the context of the workplace or community setting.
On Successfully completing the training and assessment you will be issued a Statement of Attainment Issuing you the unit of competency:
Upon successful completion of all training and assessment requirements, learners will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the following nationally recognised unit of competency:
HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting
Please note: HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation, HLTAID010 Provide basic emergency life support, and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid are embedded within HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an education and care setting and are not issued separately.
This unit of competency is nationally recognised and provides individuals with a valuable outcome that is recognised throughout Australia.
Online learning plus face-to-face classroom training and assessment
Elective Units
Learner training is supported through the provision of quality learning materials and resources. All equipment and consumables are supplied as part of the course.
Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable, casual clothes and sensible shoes.
Participants must be physically capable of performing hands-on assessment tasks. This includes performing uninterrupted CPR for a minimum of 2 minutes on an adult manikin placed on the floor, a further 2 minutes on an infant manikin placed on a firm surface, and at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted CPR on a child manikin placed on a firm surface. Participants must also demonstrate appropriate responses to a range of simulated first aid emergency situations.
The practical nature of this course means participants need to be able to kneel on the floor, sustain physical effort during CPR, and carry out first aid procedures throughout the assessment.
